Cultivating Digital Citizenship in Bacolod City

Students and representatives from DigiBayanihan and Bacolod City Government at the Digital Citizenship Workshop held at Bacolod City Public Library.

DigiBayanihan brings digital literacy to Bacolodnons through the program’s Center of Excellence, the Bacolod City Public Library. The library hosted a digital literacy workshop for students last August 16.

The workshop, entitled “It’s a Digital Life: Forming Online Communities,” aims to raise awareness on fake news and how to fight it, and to cultivate digital citizenship. Sixty three students from Bacolod Silay Airport National High School, Domingo Lacson National High School, La Consolacion College, and Luis Hervias National High School attended the event.

“This workshop is very helpful, especially for students who are frequent social media users. I can teach other students like me on how to spot fake new and how to be a responsible social media user,” said Ree-Anne Gayatin, one of the participants in the workshop. Aiming to reach more Filipinos, DigiBayanihan established Centers of Excellence across the country to become hubs for ICT-enabled services for students and other interested learners. The Bacolod City Public Library is a Center of Excellence since March 2018 and it continues to diversify its services to fit the growing needs of Bacolodnons for digital literacy, digitally-enabled literacy, and digital citizenship.

Ms. Greta Memoria, one of the librarians of Bacolod City Public Library said, “Because of this partnership with DigiBayanihan, we can expand our services to reach more Bacolodnons. Our purpose is to use digital literacy for empowerment.”

First launched in 2014, DIgiBayanihan continues to be a movement that touches the lives of Filipinos through a range of digital literacy initiatives. The program is implemented by ASSIST and supported by a multi-stakeholder partnership.
